Por que 4, 7 e 9 têm duas leituras
Quatro (四) pode ser shi ou yon, sete (七) pode ser shichi ou nana, e nove (九) pode ser ku ou kyū. Como shi soa como 死 (morte) e ku como 苦 (sofrimento), o japonês frequentemente prefere yon e kyū na contagem cotidiana para evitar a conotação de azar.
Contar objetos versus ler números
A coluna kun'yomi (hitotsu, futatsu…) é o "contador geral" usado para contar objetos até dez: 一つ, 二つ, 三つ. O on'yomi (ichi, ni, san…) é o que se usa para os números abstratos, datas e a maioria dos contadores. Domine as duas linhas e você conseguirá contar quase qualquer coisa.

- 11 = 十一 (jū-ichi) — literalmente "dez um."
- 20 = 二十 (ni-jū) — "dois dez."
- 100 = 百 (hyaku), 1.000 = 千 (sen), 10.000 = 万 (man).
- Então 25 é 二十五 (ni-jū-go) — completamente regular quando você conhece de 1 a 10.
