Confusingly Similar Kanji and How to Tell Them Apart
Some kanji differ by a single stroke. Learn the most notorious look-alike pairs — 人/入, 日/曰, 末/未 — and the trick to never mix them up.
Part of learning kanji is learning to see small differences that change everything. Here are the classic confusable pairs and the distinguishing feature to lock onto.
Single-stroke differences

The trick: anchor on the difference
Don't try to remember each character as a whole — remember the one feature that separates the pair. For 末 vs 未, ask “is the TOP line longer?” Top-heavy 末 = the top/end of a tree = “end.” Lighter top 未 = “not yet.”
Why this matters more later
Look-alikes cluster at higher levels, where 複 (compound) and 復 (return) or 識 (knowledge), 織 (weave), and 職 (occupation) share most of their strokes. Training your eye early on simple pairs builds the habit you'll need for these.
