Kanji for Body Parts: Face, Hands, and More
The kanji for eyes, ears, mouth, hands, feet and more — several of them pictographs you can still see in the shape of the character.
Body-part kanji are some of the oldest and simplest in the language — several started as literal pictures of the thing they name, which makes them a good early set for building visual memory.
The face
目 (me, eye) is a squared-off eye shape rotated on its side — once you're told that, it's hard to unsee. 口 (kuchi, mouth) is just as literal: a simple open square. Both show up constantly as radicals inside other kanji, so learning them here pays off far beyond this list.
Body and limbs
手 (te, hand) and 足 (ashi, foot/leg) are two of the most reused radicals in the whole kanji set — any character built around an action done with hands or feet is likely to contain one of them. 心 (kokoro, heart/mind) is worth extra attention too: it appears inside dozens of emotion-related kanji, from 思う (to think) to 忘れる (to forget).
Compounds worth learning alongside them
- 頭痛 (zutsuu) — headache, from 頭 (head) + 痛 (pain).
- 心配 (shinpai) — worry, literally "heart-distribution."
- 手伝う (tetsudau) — to help, built around 手 (hand).
- 顔色 (kaoiro) — complexion, literally "face color."
Because these characters are so pictographic, they're also some of the easiest to hang a mnemonic on — worth front-loading early in your study, since the payoff shows up in dozens of later compounds.
