JLPT N2 Kanji: Reaching the ~1,000 Mark for Work-Ready Japanese

N2 is the level employers ask for. It expects ~1,000 kanji and newspaper-level reading. Here are targeted tips to close the gap from N3 to N2.

7 min read

N2 is the practical destination for most serious learners — it's the level that appears on job listings and unlocks newspaper and business reading. Here's how to get there efficiently.

What N2 demands

  • Cumulative ~1,000 kanji and ~6,000 vocabulary words.
  • Reading of newspapers, editorials, and general-interest articles.
  • Faster, denser grammar with nuanced distinctions between similar expressions.

Targeted tips

  1. Master kanji compounds and on'yomi — N2 text is dense with two-kanji jukugo where both characters take Chinese readings.
  2. Learn synonyms and nuance — N2 grammar loves to test the difference between near-identical expressions.
  3. Read real material — news apps, NHK Easy graduating to regular NHK. Authentic text is your best N2 textbook.
  4. Attack look-alike kanji — at N2 you'll meet visually similar characters (複/復, 識/織/職) that must be distinguished on sight.

Build endurance

The N2 reading section is long and time-pressured. Practice reading full articles in one sitting so test day isn't the first time you sustain that focus. Reading-first study, where you're always reading something slightly above your level, builds exactly this stamina.
